In this article, I explore the role of swearing in conversational narratives. More specifically, I examine how the Greek swearword ‘malakas’, employed either by the narrators or by the story recipients, contributes to narrative identity constructions. Drawing on positioning theory, I argue that via the swearword ‘malakas’, a variety of significant narrative identities are made manifest, such as the outgroup member-story character, the ingroup member-story character, the competent narrator, the affiliative story-recipient etc.
