punctuation marks, technologically supported communication, social semiotics, Facebook
Περίληψη
This study tries to map the punctuation landscape in a Greek-language digital environment, namely Facebook postings of adolescents. Employing a computer mediated communication analysis perspective, the question asked is: what is the status of period, comma and semicolon? The data show that the main use of the period is to indicate the finality of an utterance, whereas the comma retains its written discourse functions. As far as semicolon is concerned, it is non-existent in the data, partly because of the affordances of the medium, partly because its role is substituted by periods or commas. Punctuation use depends on user identity.
