This paper elaborates on the on-going discussion on whether development of word awareness and morphological analysis can contribute to vocabulary growth. The pilot study targets adults L2 Italian learners, addressing what strategies they use in order to learn new vocabulary and whether strategies related to the morphological analysis of words are adopted. Results show that strategies related to vocabulary replication, followed by strategies related to vocabulary learning and retrieval are the favoured ones. Strategies strongly connected with the morphological analysis of words retain their high usage, while University learners outperform learners of private schools.
