Περίληψη

Aim of the present paper is to explore the types of orthographic errors made by Greeks of the diaspora, specifically Greeks who live on the east coast of the U.S.A., as well the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, which influence the shape, teaching and learning of the Greek orthographic system. The data stemming from two questionnaires distributed to the participants revealed that Greeks of the diaspora make less orthographic errors compared to Greeks who live in Greece. Greek of the diaspora prefer the preservation of historical orthography for reasons of national unity and recognize politics as a major factor affecting the shape of spoken and written language. Finally, they express their skepticism regarding a potential revision of the Greek orthography.
